Jonathan Watson on Life at Lumon

29 January 2024

What’s your name and what do you do at Lumon?

Jonathan Watson! I focus on helping our customers buy and sell overseas property, supporting and assisting them in the handling and processing of their currency exchange transactions.

When did you join Lumon and what were your first impressions?

I joined in 2010, it was a very different world and company then! I started the week of an election and was enthralled by the exciting industry I had joined and the huge potential for me to learn and advance myself and my career, becoming part of such a fast moving and energetic company.

What makes you proud to work here?

The commitment to providing great customer experience and customer service. We genuinely go the extra mile to support and look after our customers, and I feel that every person within our business from top to bottom is focused on that one goal.

What are your stand-out memories of working at Lumon so far?

Personal highlights would be our football team winning the local 5-a-side league and working during the Brexit vote of June 2016 when my working day started at 4am and finished at 8pm! This was truly a once in a generation event for financial markets, similar to Black Wednesday in the 90s and the dotcom crash of the early 2000’s I am proud to say ‘I was there’ for the Brexit vote.

I was also invited to appear on the BBC News channel during the Brexit referendum, to discuss Brexit with Clive Myrie. This was also following an article I had written about the pound, written because of working here at Lumon. Not a bad claim to fame, it was great to ring my grandma and let her know I was going to be on the TV : )

Since working here, what ways have you developed- personally and/or professionally?

One of my biggest personal developments has been my confidence in public speaking. Whilst I still get nervous, the practice of regularly reading market reports to colleagues has helped improve my self-belief and communication to no end.

We also partake in the yearly MOvember charity event, and this has seen me get more and more into my fitness.

Professionally, my knowledge of global affairs and the FX markets have also improved. And working within a team and helping to manage and train new recruits, I have learned a lot about dealing with and managing people.

What makes Lumon different from anywhere else you’ve worked?

The passion and determination to excel and achieve is endemic throughout our organisation. The consistency in belief throughout the business says to me that we don’t just say one thing and do another, there is a genuine and inspired commitment across all the teams to come together and make great things happen.

What makes you stay working here?

The camaraderie amongst our fantastic team! I have also made some good friends with whom I have shared the highs and lows of life inside and outside of work. I couldn’t ask for better people to be around.

What do you look forward to most in Lumon’s future?

I look forward to us becoming the leading payments company within our industry, attracting exciting new talent and partners to deliver an exemplary service and help make our customer’s financial dreams come true.
